Here's one film that I wanted to work. I will admit, sometimes I have a different expectation for indie films, because so many things can go wrong with limited resources...soooo many. That said, the things that went wrong in this film could have been avoided.
Firstly, I have had my fill of the "Kool" way to spell ish...I wish we could organize against this just as much as a nation-wide "Pull your Pants Up" campaign. Yet, I digress. This film could of just been named "Insecure", and I think I personally would have taken it more seriously, especially because it featured affluent and middle-class Black Folks as the main characters.
The second thing with this film was that even though the writing wasn't strong (and that's my biggest attribute to a film's overall failure), this film could've done so much better if the acting was better. I think it was a mistake to use a first-time feature actor in David's role (the lead character) because he has most of the screen time and also makes it difficult to watch the film. The point here with indie film is simple: 1. Have quality writing, if you can't have that--you better have stellar talent. Mediocre both will get you no where.
The dialogue--whoo! There was one line that tops my list as the worst line ever: David says, "I'd rather have a man's dick in my mouth than in my woman." This line... really made this film jump the shark, it was so out of place and extreme, it highlighted the rest of the film's flaws.
I will say that I liked how David was set-up, his issues with time made him an interesting character. Nephew Tommy was also a highlight in terms of talent. It was also nice to see Tempestt Bledsoe and Lamman Rucker on screen. I definitely think this piece could have worked much better with another draft on the script (particularly for dialogue) and recasting the main character. That's the T.
